Heisig Finished!

June 4, 2009 · Leave a Comment

I finished Heisig’s Remembering The Kanji!  So in theory I know how to write, and the English core meaning of 2050 odd Chinese characters. Next step in my marathon Japanese study is to make sure I do know them, then move on to some light reading of a few of the books I acquired while back in Japan.

Nothing strenuous though- learning 20-25 odd kanji a day has taken some serious dedication and five months of study. Still, anything worth doing takes its time- I’m just pleased to have finished!

Remembering Those Damn Kanji

March 31, 2009 · Leave a Comment

For the past few weeks my daily battle with the Japanese language has continued apace- I’m now up to 1050 kanji, or Chinese characters, out of the 2000 odd I need for basic comprehension. Using the “Remembering The Kanji” website, along with some Spaced Repitition Software (see previous post), I’ve made steady progress towards completing my first goal- finishing the Heisig method of studying Kanji. As a quick review…

Fear and Thriftyness in Nippon

January 15, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Ok the title needs some work, but I’m only three weeks away from returning to good old Japan for a two week soujorn. Already loaded up on lunch appointments and drinking parties, I’ll be looking to cut costs while I’m there through the two miracles of hitchhiking and couchsurfing. These two together offer an unbridled chance, a chance many travellers would pay money for, to interact with the land and the landscape, with people and places. Adding in Japanese skills should surely make it all a stress free fun-times-for-all adventure…well we’ll see.

I haven’t updated the blog for a while…that’s because I haven’t been doing a great deal, after the expenses of Christmas I’ve been saving like mad (with all the wild crazy fun that involves), studying my kanji (up to 500 on Heisig’s Remembering the Kanji now!) and occasionally going to the gym (although my right legs been injured somehow).

Three weeks to Japan!!
